Robert Musil (* 6. November 1880 in Klagenfurt; ? 15. April 1942 in Genf), von 1917 bis zur Adelsaufhebung von 1919: Robert Edler von Musil, war ein österreichischer Schriftsteller und Theaterkritiker. Bekannt ist Robert Musil vor allem als Autor des unvollendeten Romans Der Mann ohne Eigenschaften. Der Roman hatte sich von den ersten autobiographischen Entwürfen noch kurz nach dem Weltkrieg über verschiedene Romanprojekte Mitte der 1920er Jahre zu Musils Lebenswerk entwickelt, in das nach und nach sämtliche literarischen Anstrengungen eingingen. Im engeren Rahmen der deutschsprachigen Literatur seiner Zeit stellt man Musil nicht selten in eine Reihe mit Hermann Broch, Franz Kafka, Thomas Mann, Elias Canetti und anderen, deren Schreibenergie sich oft ähnlich der Musilschen aus Zusammenbruchserfahrungen nährte, die so persönlich wie epochal waren.
