Zustand: Wie neu. Steidl. 2006. First edition, first printing. Scarce first printing (not one of the later reprints). Hardcover with dustjacket. 200 x 200 mm. 168 pages. 100 color photos. Introduction by Martin Harrison. Text in english. Condition: Book inside and outside new, mint, unread. Dustjacket with slightest nicks on the front. Still originally shrink-wrapped in publisher`s plastic foil; only opened once for checking the condition. Overall near mint, near perfect condition! Collector`s copy! The immensely successful Early Color presented Leiter`s remarkable body of colour work to the public for the first time in book form. Although Edward Steichen had exhibited some of Leiter`s colour photography at the Museum of Modern Art in 1953, it remained virtually unknown to the world thereafter. Leiter moved to New York in 1946 to become a painter, yet through his friendship with Richard Pousette-Dart he quickly recognized the creative potential of photography. Leiter continued to paint, exhibiting with Philip Guston and Willem de Kooning, but the camera remained his ever-present means of recording life in the metropolis. None of Leiter`s contemporaries, with the partial exception of Helen Levitt, assembled a comparable body of work: subtle, often abstract compositions of lyrical, eloquent colour.***************Steidl, Göttingen. Hardcover with slipcase, . 300 pages, 22.2 x 3.2 x 26 cm. Herdruk 2021. ISBN 9783868282580. Saul Leiter (b. 1923 in Pittsburgh) has only in recent years received his due as one of the great pioneers of color photography. This can perhaps be attributed to the fact that Leiter saw himself for a long time mainly as a painter. After coming to New York in 1946, he exhibited alongside abstract expressionists like Willem de Kooning before beginning in the late 1940s to take photographs. Like Robert Frank or Helen Levitt, he found his motifs on the streets of New York, but at the same time was visibly interested in abstraction. Edward Steichen was one of the first to discover Leiter's photography, showing it in the 1950s in two important exhibitions at New York's Museum of Modern Art. Back then color photography was regarded as "low art," fit only for advertising. Leiter accordingly worked primarily as a fashion photographer, for magazines such as Esquire and Harper's Bazaar. Nearly forty years would go by before his extraordinary artistic color photography was rediscovered. This book, published to mark the first major retrospective of Leiter's work anywhere in the world, features for the first time, in addition to his early black and white and color images, his fashion photography, the overpainted nudes, as well as his paintings and sketchbooks. 0 g.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The first sightings of newly discovered work from Saul Leiter's abundant archive of colour slides. Now widely acclaimed as one of the world's greatest photographers, Saul Leiter(1923-2013) remained relatively unsung until he was rediscovered by curators andcritics in his early 80s, and his work has been drastically re-evaluated over the last two decades. Leiter's images evoked the flow and rhythm of life on the mid-century streets of New York in luminous colour at a time when his contemporaries were shooting in black and white. His complex and impressionistic photographs are as much about evoking an atmosphere as nailing the decisive moment. Saul Leiter was born in Pittsburgh and moved to New York City in 1946. He pioneered a painterly approach to colour photography starting in the late 1940s and producedcovers for fashion magazines such as Esquire and Harper's Bazaar before largely withdrawing from public attention in the 1980s. The publication in 2006 of his first monograph, Early Color, inspired an avid rediscovery' of Leiter's work by contemporary audiences. His studio in New York's East Village, where he lived from 1952 until his death in2013, is now the home of the Saul Leiter Foundation. The Foundation has beguna full-scale survey and organization of his more than 80,000 works, with the aim of compiling the complete' archive. This volume contains works discovered through this process, specifically colour slides, never before published or seen by the public. Meticulously curated by Margit Erb and Michael Parillo of the Saul Leiter Foundation and supported by texts that explain how Leiter built the slide archive and how it is now being explored, catalogued and restored, this new monograph, presented in a real cloth binding, will be a must-have for photography fans worldwide.

Zustand: Wie neu. Steidl. Co-published with The Howard Greenberg Library, New York. 2014. First french edition, first printing. New, mint, unread; still originally shrink-wrapped in publisher`s foil. Two hardcover with dustjacket each and slipcase. 200 x 200 mm. Text in french. Edited by Max Kozloff. Perfect condition! Collector`s copy! "The distinctive iconography of Saul Leiter`s early black and white photographs stems from his profound response to the dynamic street life of New York City in the late 1940s and 50s. While this technique borrowed aspects of the photodocumentary, Leiter`s imagery was more shaped by his highly individual reactions to the people and places he encountered. Like a Magic Realist with a camera, Leiter absorbed the mystery of the city and poignant human experiences. Together with Early Color, also published by Steidl, Early Black and White shows the impressive range of Leiter`s early photography." (from the publisher)***************Steidl, Göttingen. Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'Now firmly established as one of the world's greatest photographers, Saul Leiter (1923-2013) was relatively little known until the 2006 publication of Saul Leiter: Early Color, when he was already in his eighties. Choosing to shoot in color when black and white was the norm, Leiter portrayed midcentury New York's street life with a gorgeous painterliness that evoked the sensuality of his Abstract Expressionist contemporaries Rothko and Newman. His studio in the East Village, where he lived from 1952 until his death in 2013, is now the home of the Saul Leiter Foundation, which has commenced a full-scale survey of his more than 80,000 works. This volume contains works discovered through this project-specifically, color photography from slides never before published or seen by the public. Edited by Margit Erb and Michael Parillo of the Saul Leiter Foundation, and embellished with texts that describe how Leiter assembled his slide archive and how it is being catalogued and restored, The Unseen Saul Leiter'-- Provided by publisher.

softcover 76 pages, Illustrated. English text 148 x 210 mm. ISBN 9789081772518. Saul Leiter has been digging in his archive and selected 34 unpublished color photographs for his fourth solo exhibition at Roger Szmulewicz's GALLERY FIFTY ONE, in Antwerp. The lyricism and intensity of his vision come into fullest play in his eloquent handling of color: to the rapid recording of the spontaneous unfolding of life on the street, Leiter adds an unconventional sense of form and a brilliantly improvisational, and frequently almost abstract, use of found colors and tones. Leiter?s visual language of fragmentation, ambiguity and contingency is evoked in Saul Leiter: Early Color by one hundred subtle, painterly images that stretched the boundaries of photography in the second half of the twentieth-century. 260 g.
