Through his treatise, I Quattro Libri dell'Architettura, as well as by his built example, he irrevocably modified western architectural thought. During his lifetime he transformed his adopted city -- of Vicenza and the surrounding countryside. Despite the attention given to Palladio's work by historians in recent years, the circumstances -- his life and practice remain largely conjectural (figure 1). -- Palladio was active in the Veneto region of northern Italy during the mid-sixteenth century, a period of unusual economic growth and cultural advancement. The political stability that resulted from Venice's control of the terra fiirma, -- couupled with the challenge to her domination of the seas by the League of Cambrai, prompted a shift in the region's economic base from commerce to agriculture. Land reclamation projects, resulting in an extensive canal system, m ilitated this economic shift, which, in turn, prompted opportunities for architectural commissions from the rising land-based aristocracy. Because Pal-ladio was the only notable sixteenth-century architect trained in the region, he -as the first to absorb the particular economic, social, and geographic conditions of the Veneto, and incorporate them into an architecture both fundamental and innovative. -- Palladio was born Andrea di Pietro in 1508, the son of a Paduan miller, Appremticit iced to a stonemason at thirteen, Andrea broke his contract by 1524 and moved to Vicenza, where he joined the guild of masons and stone carvers. From 1524 to the 1540s he was associated with the Pedemuro workshop of Giacomo da Porlezza, responsible for most of the monumental, decorative sculpture in Vicenza. -- It was probably around 1537 that Andrea met Giangiorgio Trissino, the Vicentine intellectual and humanist who redirected the course of his life. Trissino was rebuilding a villa at Cricoli, just outside Vicenza, where he established a learned academy to enable young aristocrats of the city to receive a classical education. According to an eighteenth-century source, Andrea was involved in the villa's renovation, undertaken by the Pedemuro workshop. Trissino took the stonemason into his academy, directed his first formal architectural education, and gave him the name Palladio.1 -- Palladio's training was unusual for the time in being specifically directed toward architecture, rather than toward more general humanist subjects. Trissino was himself a humanist architect; he was responsible for the layout of his villa at Cricoli, the first building in Vicenza to evoke the classical spirit of antiquity (figures 2, 3). The Villa Trissino was an important precursor to Palladio's own work. Its symmetrical layout, major central room, and loggia with flanking towers became regular components of Palladio's villas. The loggia, completed by 1538, is based on a design of Sebastiano Serlio, a variation on Raphael's Villa Madama in Rome, which Serlio published in 1540 (figure 4). -- Serlio was an important figure in Palladio's training, although whether this resulted from the influence of his publications or from direct contact with the theoretician himself remains unclear. Palladio may have encountered Serlio when he was in Vicenza working on the Rasilica in 1539. Palladio's earliest architectural drawings, dating from this period, are indebted to Serlio's example. Serlio's five books on architecture, published individually between 1537 and 1547, comprise the first treatise to deal with architectural theory in a primarily visual, rather than verbal, manner. Palladio used illustrations from Serlio as sources for his designs, and he adopted a similar format for his own publication. -- Trissino introduced Palladio to other architectural treatises available at the time. His interest in antiquity was influenced by his study of Vitruvius's first-century text, of which several sixteenth-century editions were available with interpretive illustrations. Palladio also studied Alberti's treatise and incorporated many ideas from De Re Aedificatura into his own Quattro Libri of 1570. The first quarto edition of Sebastiano Serlio's (1475-1554) Five Books of Architecture, one of the first modern works to popularise the genre by pairing high quality illustrations with text explaining architectural theory in accessible terms. As a result, Serlio's work found favour amongst the painters of the Venetian school during the mid-sixteenth century, leading to a revival in the use of elaborate architectural perspectives in the background of paintings such as Titian's Presentation of the Virgin, which was completed in 1538. The plates in the present edition are reduced copies of the folio originals by Giovanni Krugher (Chrieger). With provenance for the Swiss art historian Heinrich Wölfflin (1864-1945), who succeeded his former mentor Jacob Burckhardt, the great historian of the Renaissance, as Chair of Art History at the University of Basel in 1893. In 1886 he defended his dissertation Prolegomena zu einer Psychologie der Architektur on the psychological aspects of architectural appreciation, and developed a methodology for the study of art using side-by-side image comparisons that remains a mainstay of art history pedagogy today. Vulgarisateur de génie, il adopta pour cela une démarche systématique et pédagogique, en faisant le choix d'une écriture simple et limpide en langue vulgaire. Son originalité résidait d'abord intellectuellement dans la confrontation des relevés d'après l'antique avec les théories de Vitruve, et ensuite matériellement dans la primauté accordée aux images dans ses livres. Une telle entreprise avait un coût, et la difficulté que Serlio rencontra pour convaincre des mécènes en Italie, puis en France et en Allemagne, explique en partie l'histoire éditoriale de son traité d'architecture : le livre IV, contenant ses conclusions théoriques sur les ordres d'architecture antiques, parut en premier, en italien, en 1537 à Venise chez Francesco Marcolini. Le livre III, constituant une anthologie des chefs-d'oeuvre antiques, parut en italien en 1540 chez le même imprimeur-libraire. Vinrent ensuite les deux premiers livres, contenant les rudiments, c'est-à-dire la géométrie et la perspective (avec un célèbre développement sur la scénographie théâtrale), qui furent publiés dans un même volume en 1545, en français, à Paris chez Jean Barbé ? la première édition en italien n'étant publiée qu'en 1560. Le livre V, consacré aux églises, et le « Livre extraordinaire », traitant des portes, parurent tous deux dans des éditions bilingues franco-italiennes, l'un en 1547 à Paris chez Michel de Vascosan, et l'autre en 1551 à Lyon chez Jean Ier de Tournes. Le livre VII, sur les « accidents » et aléas qu'un architecte peut rencontrer dans son activité, parut de manière posthume, en italien, en 1575 à Francfort chez André Wechel et Jacopo Strada. La première édition vraiment collective, réunissant les livres I-V, VII et extraordinaire, parut en italien en 1584 à Venise chez Francesco De Franceschi. Enfin, le livre VI, consacré aux habitations des différentes classes sociales, et l'ouvrage sur la castramétation de Polybe appelé abusivement « livre VIII » par Jacopo Strada, restèrent à l'état de manuscrits et d'épreuves, et ne furent publiés que tout récemment.Provenance : « este libor es de el pader don Juan Ramires religioso de la Cartuga del Paular » (ex-libris manuscrit ancien), c'est-à-dire : « Ce livre est au père don Juan Ramires religieux de la Chartreuse du Paular ».
