Lange wurde in Zweifel gestellt, dass der/die Fotograf\*in eine Rolle bei der Entstehung einer Fotografie spielt, da er/sie ja 'nur' eine Maschine bedient, welche letzten Endes das Bild erschafft. Heute jedoch scheint es uns als selbstverständlich, dass es Fotografieausstellungen gibt, dass die Exponate einzeln gerahmt hinter Glasscheiben ausgestellt werden, meistens mit Vermerk auf den/die Künstler\*in des Werkes.Doch dieser Status musste hart erkämpft werden. Wesentliche Bedeutung in der Etablierung der Fotografie als Kunst, kommt der Fotografieabteilung des Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York zu. Es scheint, dass sich vor allem während der Übernahme der Fotografieabteilung des MoMA von John Szarkowski als Nachfolger Edward Steichens ein großer Wandel im Ansehen der Fotograf\*innen vollzog.Um diesen Wandel zu untersuchen und zu bestätigen, wird im Folgenden zuerst auf die bedeutende Rolle der Fotografieabteilung des MoMA bei der Etablierung der Fotografie als Kunst eingegangen. Denn schon vor der Zeit Edward Steichens als Direktor des Fotografieabteilung des MoMA fanden hier Prozesse statt, welche sowohl die Fotografie und ihre Anerkennung als Kunst als auch das Verständnis von den Fotograf\*innen als Künstler\*innen förderten. Im Anschluss daran werden die beiden Ausstellungen THE FAMILY OF MAN (1955) und THE PHOTOGRAPHER'S EYE (1964) vorgestellt, wobei auf ihren thematischen Inhalt als auch auf ihre Ausstellungsart eingegangen werden soll. Anhand der beiden unterschiedlichen Ausstellungskonzepte, der Herangehensweisen an die Fotografie als Kunst in den Ausstellungen und in Szarkowskis Fall, vor allem noch mit Blick auf sein gleichnamiges theoretisches Werk zu THE PHOTOGRAPHER'S EYE, sollen die Unterschiede in den Ansichten über die Fotograf\*innen als Individuen, als Künstler\*innen und im allgemeinen deren gesellschaftlicher Status untersucht werden.
