(map of Dublin) Smith, a once-prominent art and literary critic but now largely forgotten, tries to help the befuddled reader make sense of Joyce's masterpiece, but you get the sense that his heart ain't in it. (His dedication credits -- or blames -- the dedicatee's "sly Machiavellian taunts" as his impetus for writing the book.) Here's an example of his helpful advice, from page 21: "When a man shouts his hatreds as loudly, as frequently, as hysterically as Joyce, the Psychologist begins to suspect that his 'hate' is but a mask for love. So much for that. I have turned aside here for the reason that the issue rises in probably every extended conversation, and in nearly every chapter of 'Ulysses.' Let the reader work it out for himself." (Gee, thanks, teach.) At another juncture he observes that "one detects in the critics of James Joyce either an adolescent and effervescing enthusiasm born of a yearning after the bizarre, or a middle-aged and pecksniffing fear of succumbing to a colossal literary hoax." He isn't completely down on the book, however: he finds its vocabulary "a delight," allows as how it "abounds in hoaxes, rollicking nonsense, and great good humor," and admits that the author -- "this snarling Celt" -- "has not merely added new weapons, but a complete new arsenal to the realistic school of fiction." His final assessment: "Vulgar it is, certainly, -- as vulgar as a bed pan, as vulgar as life itself. But it is revlieved by moods of singular beauty; it swings one from the stinks of the lavatory to the realms of luminous ether. The author, whose name is usually hyphenated (i.e. Jordan-Smith), was best known (i.e. most notorious) for originating an art movement in the 1920s, "Disumbrationism," that was eventually revealed to be an elaborate hoax, a satire of modernism with the purpose of demonstrating that "most art critics didn't know what they were talking about." (He himself posed as the movement's leading artist, "Pavel Jerdanowitsch," creating amateurish paintings that were praised by critics.) From 1933 to his retirement in 1957 he wrote an art- and literary-criticism column for the Los Angeles Times.

A fantastic association copy, signed by legendary publisher Sylvia Beach with a contemporary inscription dated Paris August 18, 1928 opposite rear paste-down. Bound in publisher's pale green boards faded to tan, with errata slip tipped in at rear. Good, with cracking at spine leaving binding very fragile, cup ring to upper cover. Joyce's second book of poetry, a slim volume containing 13 poems. Sylvia Beach was an American ex-pat, known for her iconic Paris bookshop, Shakespeare and Company, where she published James Joyce's Ulysses (1922), and encouraged the publication of and sold copies of Hemingway's first book, Three Stories and Ten Poems (1923). While autographed copies of her book Shakespeare and Company published in 1960 are often available on the market, Joyce titles with Beach's contemporaneous inscriptions from the heyday of the Lost Generation era are extremely uncommon and desirable. A fragile yet very important copy.

[iv], 40, 40A-J, 41-247, [1]pp. New York, Woodhull, Claflin & Co., A very good copy of Victoria Woodhull's (1838-1927) polemic, published as part of her campaign as the first female candidate for President of the United States.   She announced her candidacy in April, 1870, running for the Equal Rights Party, and famously chose Frederick Douglass as her vice president. Douglass had campaigned for the enfranchisement of newly liberated Black men from the war's conclusion in 1865. This largely symbolic gesture - Woodhull didn't ask his permission and Douglass didn't accept the nomination - was surely to highlight the increased inequality when enfranchisement was granted with the ratification of the 15th amendment on 3 February, 1870.   Her candidacy came to prominence when, on 11 January 1871, Woodhull "became the first woman to testify before a congressional committee, addressing the House Judiciary Committee on the subject of women's suffrage. Her argument was that the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments already guaranteed a woman's right to vote. All that was needed, she said, was for Congress to pass an act guaranteeing those rights. Susan B. Anthony was so taken with Woodhull's argument that she asked her to repeat it at the National Woman Suffrage Association Convention" (Felsenthal).   Despite Woodhull's best efforts, she "received no electoral college votes, and her party made the ballot in only twenty-two states ." Furthermore, her "enemies pounced on her utopian call for sexual freedom for both men and women, and stirred up the fear of miscegenation that white voters felt, with only minimal prompting, at the sight of a white women consorting with a black man" (Crispin). This later printing of what is generally recognized to be the most important 20th century novel in English is inscribed by the author to one of his earliest and most important supporters, and is offered in a binding by an influential Designer Bookbinder. First issued in 1922, "Ulysses" rocked the literary world. J. B. Priestley, writing in the "Clarion" in 1934, said what most scholars and critics acknowledge--that "as a literary feat, an example of virtuosity in narration and language, it is an astounding creation. Nobody who knows anything about writing can read the book and deny its author, not merely talent, but sheer genius." Our copy was presented by Joyce to H. G. Wells (1866-1946), whose support of "Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man" was instrumental in establishing Joyce's literary reputation. Reviewing that book in 1916, Wells praised "its quintessential and unfailing reality. One believes in Stephen Dedalus as one believes in few characters in fiction." He considered "Portrait" to be "by far the most living and convincing picture that exists of an Irish Catholic upbringing," and noted how sharply it contrasted the Irish and the English: "No single book has ever shown how different they are, as completely as this most memorable novel." The two men did not meet until 12 years later, in Paris, at which time Joyce inscribed the present copy of his masterwork to Wells. At the same time, Joyce presented Wells with some excerpts of what would become "Finnegan's Wake." On 23 November 1928, Wells wrote to Joyce from his winter home in the south of France, expressing his regret that he could not promote these latest works with the same enthusiasm: "I have enormous respect for your genius dating from your earliest books and I feel now a great personal liking for you but you and I are set upon absolutely different courses. . . . I want a language and statement as simple and clear as possible. . . . Who the hell is this Joyce who demands so many waking hours of the few thousand I have still to live for a proper appreciation of his quirks and fancies and flashes of rendering?" Still, Wells acknowledged, "Your work is an extraordinary experiment and I would go out of my way to save it from destructive or restrictive interruption." The abstract binding by distinguished modern artisan Sally Lou Smith evokes a journey: as the multicolored inlays march from the rear edge around the spine and across the front against a grim, gray ground, Bloom's peregrinations through Dublin and the characters he encounters seem to be brought to mind. Born in the United States, Smith (1925-2007) spent several years in France, then settled in 1958 in London. There, she spent four and a half years learning bookbinding under John Corderoy at Camberwell School of Arts & Crafts before beginning to work out of her own bindery in 1963. Her work has been widely honored both in her early days (she won the bookbinding award given by Major J. R. Abbey in 1965) and for many years since (among others, she won three Thomas Harrison Competition prizes). Hardcover. A collection of 21 novels by Dell, nearly all Inscribed to her childhood nurse. The books were published between 1915 and 1938. A few are reprints, but most are English or American first editions, and most are inscribed in the year of publication. The copies lack dust jackets and are generally in very good to fine condition. Ethel Mary Dell (1881-1939) was a popular romance novelist in the early part of the 20th Century. Born in 1881 into a middle-class English family, she led a quiet, ordinary life, being very shy and retiring in nature. Although introverted, she had a lively imagination and began writing stories, and getting them published in popular magazines at a young age. Her first novel, *The Way of an Eagle*, was published in 1911 and was an immediate success. She continued writing popular romance novels until her death in 1939. Many of her works, including several represented here, were turned into silent films in the 1910s and 1920s. Dell's extraordinary popularity can be difficult for today's readers to appreciate but her influence is reflected in the writings of several authors with whom they would be more familiar. For example, the monologues of James Joyce's character Gerty MacDowell in *Ulysses* are written in the style of Dell's novels. P.G. Wodehouse created a character in his famous Jeeves and Wooster series based on Dell: "Rosie M. Banks," and in a separate short story he also had a similar character named "Leila M. Pinkney." Both characters are authors of romance novels and explicitly based on Dell. The protagonist of George Orwell's *Keep the Aspidistra Flying* frequently mentions Dell. In these instances, both Orwell and Wodehouse were critical of Dell and exhibited the tendency of writers and artists of every age to disparage their contemporaries whose appeal was broader, and whose success was more commercial. Dell reportedly paid little heed to such attacks; she considered herself a storyteller first and foremost. Her aim was to entertain her readers, and this she accomplished. While her fame has long since waned, her writing and its immense popularity are no less a reflection of her time than the relatively few works of her peers that are still read today. Despite her lucrative writing career and its attendant fame, Dell remained almost pathologically shy. Few photographs were ever taken of her and she was never interviewed by the press. When she was 40, she married Lieutenant-Colonel Gerald Savage, who dedicated himself to his wife's career and fiercely guarded her privacy. Because of these circumstances, signed books by Dell are rare. This set of her works, with their intimate association, is therefore highly unusual. The Exile was Pound's short-lived modernist magazine, featuring his own work and contributions from Richard Aldington, Ernest Hemingway, W. B. Yeats, William Carlos Williams, and many others. No further numbers were published. The first number of The Exile was, in reality, published in a sort of exile (albeit self-imposed), being printed by Darantiere, the printer of Ulysses, and issued by Pound to Britain and the US from the European continent. Copies of the first number are frequently stamped "made in France", but this copy is not so marked. Pound later moved publication to Chicago, and, for the last number, to New York. As noted by Hoffman, Allen, and Ulrich in The Little Magazine, "the four issues of Pound's Exile afford him an opportunity for full expression of his editorial temperament. Pound's career. has always been marked by a wish to dogmatize, impress, or shock. He regards only a small group of persons intelligent enough for conversation or friendship. There is always something of the poseur in Pound's attitudinizing, but his judgment, especially in matters aesthetic, is often surprisingly good, and always refreshing" (p. 284). Rare collection of documents related to the 1871 TreatyÂofÂWashington including signatures of all of the key figures involved in its signing including President Ulysses S. Grant, his SecretaryÂof State Hamilton Fish and the British delegation led by George Robinson, Earl de Grey and Ripon. The collection was assembled by Frederic Daustini Cremer who acted as secretary to de Grey and travelled with him and his son Viscount Goderich toÂWashington for the proceedings, where he also obtained letters by William Sherman amongst others for his collection and contains:Â Two lined folio pages containing the signatures of the British and American signatories of the Treaty of Washington, including: the British High Commissioners (George Robinson, the Earl de Grey and Ripon (chairman), Stafford Northcote, Edward Thornton, John Macdonald and Montague Bernard) and the American delegation (U.S. Secretary of State Hamilton Fish (chairman), Robert Schenck, Samuel Nelson, Ebenezer Hoar and George Williams), with seven other protagonists. 2 pages, folio, written on recto only on lined paper, watermark 'Department of State/ US', creased, page one affixed to an album leaf, page two loose, dated at head "May 8 1871 11am."
