Victor Hugoâs âgreat novel has been hailed as a masterpiece of popular literature, an epic poem in prose about God, humanity, and Hugo⦠Hugo hoped that Les Misà rables would be one of if not the âprincipal summitsâ of his body of works. Despite its length, complexity, and occasionally unbelievable plot and characterization, it remains a masterpiece of popular literature. It anticipates Balzac in its realism, but in its flights of imagination and lyricism, its theme of redemption, and its melding of myth and history, it is uniquely Hugoâ (Dolbow, 149, 214). Charles E. Wilbour was hired by the Carleton Publishing Company to translate Hugo's grand masterpiece, and he did so very quickly, allowing the first American edition to be published within months of its French release. L'édition originale des Misérables fut légalement établie par trois éditeurs différents, Pagnerre en France, Lacroix en Belgique et Steinacker en Allemagne, mai cette dernière sous l'égide de l'éditeur officiel A. Lacroix, Verboeckhoven & Cie. La question de la prévalence d'une édition sur l'autre agite depuis longtemps le monde de la bibliophilie et les bibliographes sont restés divisés sur cette épineuse question. Carteret et Vicaire par exemple assuraient que l'édition parisienne devait être privilégiée, tandis que Vanderem et Clouzot donnaient la primeur à l'édition belge. Plus qu'une simple question de chronologie, cette dispute bibliographique révèle la complexité de la notion d'édition originale et l'importance symbolique qu'elle revêt pour l'histoire littéraire et en particulier pour cette uvre magistrale qui compte parmi les plus importantes de la littérature mondiale. Etrangement, sans que cette question ait été réellement tranchée, l'édition de Bruxelles est aujourd'hui communément décrite comme antérieure à celle de Paris, tandis que l'édition de Leipzig est tout simplement ignorée. Les Misérables seraient donc parus le 30 ou 31 mars chez Lacroix et le 3 avril chez Pagnerre. Les arguments de cette antériorité belge sont cependant tous réfutables, et dès 1936, Georges Blaizot en avait démontré la fragilité. Le premier argument s'appuie sur une lettre de Victor Hugo adressée à Lacroix de 1865 et dans laquelle, le poète qualifia lui-même l'édition belge de « princeps » : « Typographiquement, il faut se régler en tout sur l'édition belge princeps des Misérables, en dilatant plutôt qu'en resserrant » écrit-il au sujet des Travailleurs de la mer qui paraîtront en 1866. Or cette désignation de Hugo n'est en aucun cas une indication bibliographique, comme l'explique Georges Blaizot, dénonçant l'interprétation abusive de P. de Lacretelle et du Dr Michaux : « Le poète précise un point, un seul, très simple, très clair, très précis : l'édition belge princeps (c'est-à-dire la première parue des éditions belges) doit servir de type aux éditions futures. Il dit cela, il dit bien cela, il ne dit que cela. » (Georges Blaizot in Le Bulletin du bibliophile et du bibliothécaire, 1936). En effet à la fameuse édition in-8 succèdera une plus modeste édition in-12 en octobre de la même année. Le second argument est plus important. Il s'appuie sur une lettre d'Adèle Hugo à son mari relatant la rocambolesque aventure de la publication française quatre jours avant la date prévue. Cette lettre sera partiellement reproduite en 1904 dans les uvres complètes publiées par Meurice et Simon, avec la date supposée du « [31 mars 1862] ». Adèle y raconte les motifs de la précipitation éditoriale française : « Auguste [Vacquerie] nous apprend que Les Misérables paraissent sous trois jours. Étonnement mêlé de satisfaction. Auguste me raconte qu'ils comptaient faire paraître Les Misérables le 7 avril ; que le matin [Noël] Parfait était accouru effaré chez [Paul] Meurice lui dire qu'il sortait de voir aux mains de [Paul] Siraudin, un exemplaire des Misérables qu'il avait acheté la veille à Bruxelles. » Ce témoignage et la datation de la lettre dans ces notes de l'éditeur sont sans doute à l'origine de l'affirmation de l'antériorité de la publication belge. First authorized English edition. Released in full in October 1862, it was preceded only by the first two instalments of the pirated version (published in New York between June and July of the same year), and it remains considerably scarcer than its American counterpart. Sir Frederick Charles Lascelles Wraxall (1828-1865), a military historian, was an eccentric choice of official translator for the British edition. He was recommended to Hugo by Alphonse Esquiros, a controversial French politician and author in exile in England who taught at the Royal Military Academy. Wraxall "fancied himself an expert on Waterloo", and "did not hesitate to alter the meaning of Hugo's novel whenever he disagreed with passages pertaining to Napoleon Bonaparte's downfall" (Grey), often by omitting the offending sections. The translation rights bought by Hurst and Blackett ensured that only Wraxall's translation could be distributed in Britain. The publishers issued it in an expensive three-volume format rather than in five parts (as originally conceived by Hugo), and it was mainly destined for circulating libraries. A second edition was released the next month, and Hurst and Blackett maintained the idiosyncrasies of the translation. Certes il y eu les aléas de la vie?: George Sand ne publie réellement qu'en 1832, à un moment où Victor Hugo est déjà au fait de sa gloire ; et puis il y eut l'exil de Victor Hugo de 1851 à 1870, mais cela n'explique pas tout?! Au début, ils ne font pas vraiment parti de la même coterie?: Victor Hugo, Pair de France, soutien de Louis-Philippe d'un côté, George Sand socialiste de l'autre. Ils ne s'apprécient pas vraiment même si George Sand porte une certaine admiration agacée à Victor Hugo, traité de grandiloquent?: «?le plus bavard des poètes sublimes?» tandis que Hugo lui, trouve carrément que «?Sand ne sait pas écrire?»?! Puis, avec le coup d'état de Napoléon III, Victor Hugo évolue politiquement ; rapidement il déborde George Sand sur sa gauche, s'exile alors que George Sand s'accommode de l'exil intérieur. Leur relation ne se réchauffe que très, très faiblement?: «?George Sand a du talent, c'est tout?». En exil Victor Hugo publie Les Châtiments, uvre très critique qui est évidemment interdite en France. George Sand aimerait bien que Victor Hugo soit moins intransigeant dans ses écrits de façon à être publié. La publication des Contemplations en 1856, nettement moins polémique, est saluée par George Sand et marque une nouvelle phase de leurs relations. En fait, leur premier contact épistolaire ne concerne pas la vie littéraire. Nini la petite fille de George Sand meurt en 1855, Victor Hugo toujours très marqué par le décès de sa fille Léopoldine compatit ; la perte d'un être cher les rapproche. Les voici amis, George Sand devient un «?génie?», elle sera souvent invitée à Guernesey . sans suite, leur relation ne sera jamais familière. Victor Hugo lui apporte son soutien lors de la parution des Beaux Messieurs de Bois Doré (1858), mais George Sand s'énerve quand il refuse l'amnistie de 1859 alors que de son côté elle cherche à adoucir la situation des proscrits. Lors de la publication des Misérables (1862) Victor Hugo cherche le soutien de George Sand mais ce soutien lui fera défaut. Victor Hugo en est attristé, George Sand affirmera préférer la poésie de Victor Hugo à son uvre en prose. Au retour d'exil, avec la Commune, voici une nouvelle incompréhension ; Victor Hugo soutient, George Sand est horrifiée?: légaliste et choquée par la violence, elle condamne avec des termes extrêmement durs cette Commune de Paris. Néanmoins, à partir de là, ces deux-là se soutiennent et se défendent dès que l'un ou l'autre est attaqué. En 1876, c'est Victor Hugo qui prononcera le célèbre éloge funèbre de George Sand?: «?Je pleure une morte, je salue une immortelle .?» Les relations de George Sand et de Victor Hugo ont donc beaucoup évolué au cours de leur vie.
