Hierzu werden die Erfahrungen während des Kontaktes mit den indigenen Einwohnern des Feuerlandes und Tahitis von Louis Antoine de Bougainville und James Cook sowie deren Expeditionsteilnehmern gegenübergestellt und miteinander verglichen. Zur Verdeutlichung findet im Fall Cooks noch ein Exkurs zu den Ureinwohnern Australiens, den Aborigines, statt. In dem Zeitalter der europäischen Expansion brechen mehrere Expeditionen von Europa in Richtung des Pazifiks auf. Bei diesen Expeditionen geht es nicht darum, sagenhafte Reichtümer oder wundersame Phänomene, wie zu Zeiten der ersten Expansion, zu entdecken. Vielmehr sind nun wissenschaftliche als auch wirtschaftliche-imperialistische Bestrebungen vordergründig. Der französische Seefahrer Louis Antoine de Bougainville erhält von seiner Regierung den Auftrag, als erster französischer Staatsbürger die Welt zu umsegeln und den in der Vorstellung der Europäer existierenden Südkontinent, die 'terra australis incognita' zu entdecken. Der Auftrag des Briten James Cook, den er von der Royal Society bekommt, lautet, die Insel Tahiti anzusteuern. Die Royal Society erhofft sich dort offiziell besonders günstige Bedingungen, um den für den 3. Juni 1769 vorhergesagten Vorbeizug der Venus an der Sonne beobachten zu können. Der inoffizielle Auftrag Cooks lautet jedoch auch, die seit der Antike auf der Südhalbkugel vermutete Landmasse 'terra australis incognita' zu entdecken, welche als Ausgleich für die Landmasse im Norden dienen soll. Um dem wissenschaftlichen Anspruch der Expeditionen Genüge zu tun, werden alle von einer Vielzahl an Wissenschaftlern der verschiedensten Disziplinen begleitet.

The French had sailed into the Pacific since the later seventeenth cetury and indeed completed several circumnavigations early in the following century, but the ocean remained largely a Spanish preserve until British navigators began to cross its vast expanse in the mid 1760s. France then became concerned that Britain might establish its superiority in the area, and welcomed Louis de Bougainville's proposal for a voyage of exploration, which was undertaken in 1766-9. Bougainville's first task was to hand over to Spain a colony he had established on the Falkland Islands. This done, he sailed through the still imperfectly-known Straits of Magellan and into the poorly charted southern Pacific. He made a number of discoveries in the south-west, but was just too late to discover Tahiti, where Samuel Wallis had preceded him by less than a year. Reports on Bougainville's reception there and on life in the island were to create wide interest and controversy in Europe. He then sailed through the Samoan Islands and on to Vanuatu, as far as the edge of the Australian Great Barrier Reef, and north towards New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. He made a number of discoveries, endeavouring to complete the inadequate charts of the times, and leaving his name to a number of features, the best known of which is the island of Bougainville. He returned home by way of the Dutch East Indies and the Indian Ocean. His voyage led to further French voyages to the Pacific, for which he acted as adviser. His achievements and his influence were recognized in his promotion to rear-admiral, his election to the Institut de France, and his appointment as senator and count by Napoleon I. The bougainvillea flower, discovered during his voyage, was so named in his honour by the expedition's naturalist. Although Bougainville published an account of his voyage in 1771, his original journal was published only in 1977; the present volume makes the latter text available for the first time in English translation.

Er umsegelte als erster Franzose die Welt. 1764 gründete er eine Kolonie auf den heutigen Falklandinseln, die er nach der Stadt seiner Abreise, St. Malo, Les nouvelles Malouines benannte, und die bald an die 150 Einwohner zählte.
