Tan cloth over illustrated white and black paper board chemise portfolio, with flaps. #29 from a limited edition of 550 total copies. This copy is inscribed and signed on the colophon by artist Gershon Knispel to Israeli philosopher and writer Jacob S. Levinger. A series of 24 loose plates of evocative original black lithographs by acclaimed Israeli artist Gershon Knispel (1932-2018) which illustrate the content of Bertholt Brecht's powerful anti-war poem "Kinderkreuzzug 1939" (The Children's Crusade). 23 of these plates are numbered, each with corresponding text passages from the poem, and a small reproduction of the related image printed on a translucent Japan vellum paper onlay. There is an additional unnumbered plate featuring a lithographic illustrated portrait of Bertolt Brecht, as well as the title plate which contains publication information on the verso. This Hebrew-language edition was published on the ten anniversary of Brecht's death and features text translation by Israeli poet and writer Raphael Eliaz (1905-1974). Also included is a loose 8-page pamphlet, printed on translucent Japan vellum, which contains introductory text from Dutch museum curator and art critic Willem Sandberg (1897â"1984) and Israeli writer Mati Meged (1923-2003). Text throughout in Hebrew. Slipcase with foxing and water stains. Chemise with some light foxing, as well as minor rubbing and bumping to extremities. Title plate with a few stains. All the other plates clean and vibrant. Slipcase in good, chemise in very good-, plates in very good+ to near fine condition overall. * The first edition of this portfolio was originally published in Germany, in 1962, with text in German and Portuguese.
