After Eros / Cupid had shot them with different arrows Daphne would not return Apollo's love pursuits and eventually was turned into a laurel tree by her father Peneus. But Apollo still adored her and the laurel tree became eternally green and used to crown the heads of leaders (wrath). This plate symbolizes the Jesuits not running away from thing. Surrounded by a decorative border with ornaments. Copperplate engraving and text on verge type hand laid paper. Text front and rear. Description: This rare authentic old antique print / plate originates from: 'Afbeeldinghe van d'eerste eeuwe der Societeyt Iesu voor ooghen ghestelt door de Duyts-Nederlantsche Provincie der selver Societeyt.' (transl.: Images of the first century of Jesuits presented by the German-Netherlands Province of said Society.), by Jean Bollandus ao., published by Plantijn/Plantin, Antwerp, 1640. This work was translated by Laurentius Uwens from the latin ed., published in the same year: 'Imago primi saeculi societatis Iesu .' The famous centennial publication of the Low Countries Jesuits, containing beautiful emblematic engravings.Artists and Engravers: Authors: Johannes Bolland (1596-1665), Jean de Tollenaere (1582-1643), Sidronius de Hossche (1596-1653), Jacques van de Walle (1599-1690), Philip Fruytiers (1610-1666). Francis van Bossuit (1635 -1692): famous Flemmish sculptor . He was born in Brussels in 1635. Already early in his life he went to Italy where he soon became famous for his ivory carvings of antique statues. In1675 he went to Amsterdam together with Bonaventura van Overbeke (1660-1706). The engravings were made by Mattys Pool (1676-1727) after the drawings by the Dutch painter Barent Graat (1628-1709). Condition: Very good, given age. Minimal staining / soiling.
