Second printing, with four variant pages: page 7 sees the Emil Nolde painting substituted with a sketch by George Grosz, and an Otto Dix painting by a portrait painted by Oskar Kokoschka. On page 9 two paintings by Emil Nolde were replaced with a sculpture by Ludwig Gies. On page 15, entitled "painted defense sabotage," the top painting by Otto Dix is moved to the bottom and the second painting replaced with another Otto Dix painting at top. On page 23 the Kurt Schwitters painting "Merzbild" was omitted in this edition. The text on the respective pages changed accordingly. This brochure was published to accompany the infamous exhibition "Entartete Kunst" (degenerate art), which took place in 1937 in various cities throughout Germany. Illustrated throughout with b/w photographic reproductions of art which did not fit the ideal of the National Socialists. Shows works by artists such as Otto Dix, E. L. Kirchner, Morgner, K. Eisner, Schmidt-Rottluff, George Grosz, Paul Klee, and others. Excerpts from speeches by Hitler in relation to art on opposite page of most illustrations. Text in German, Gothic script. Pages nine and twenty-five with flawed printing in one of the two paragraphs each. Light wear along edges of wrappers, minor creasing, back cover lightly rubbed. Published to accompany the infamous exhibition "Entartete Kunst" (Degenerate Art), shown in various cities throughout Germany starting in 1937. The guides are illustrated throughout with b/ w photographic reproductions of art deemed to be "degenerate" by the National Socialists. Shown are works by artists such as Otto Dix, E. L. Kirchner, Morgner, Nolde, K. Eisner, Schmidt-Rottluff, George Grosz, Paul Klee, and many others. Excerpts from speeches by Hitler in relation to art on opposite page of most illustrations. This first edition of the exhibition guide ranges among the most egregious documents of Nazi barbarism. 'After years of confiscating works of the artists of the Brücke, the Blaue Reiter, abstract art in general and artwork with social demands or accusations. The artworks were transported to Munich where the exhibition was curated and shown from July 19 to September 30, 1937. From February 1938 to April 1941 it traveled to Berlin, Leipzig, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Frankfurt am Main, Wien, Salzburg, Stettin and Halle. Some two million visitors saw this exhibition. The Hamburger Kunsthalle for example had 983 artworks confiscated, 496 came from the Frankfurt Städel-Galerie, and 900 from the Düsseldorfer Kunstsammlung.' (Ketterer, Dialoge, Volume I). This edition varies in text and presented images from the 2nd edition on pages 7, omitting works of Emil Nolde and Otto Dix, replacing them with George Grosz drawing and Kokoschka's "Männerkopf" with subsequent changes in text, 9, omitting two reproductions of Nolde paintings, replacing them with "Christus" by Ludwig Gies, 15, replacing one of the Otto Dix works, and 23, removing "Das Merzbild 1919" from Kurt Schwitters. Wraps with light wear and creasing, slightly rubbed on back cover. Overall in very good condition. [WITH] 1. Original orange flyer (8 x 5 1/4"). Stamped "3. Aug. 1937" at top of right corner. Scathing flyer denouncing the art presented in the exhibition "Entartete Kunst." The text translated from German: 'Tortured Canvas - Emotional Decay - Pathological Dreamers - Insane good-for-nothings awarded prices by Jewish cliques, lauded by writers, were products and producers of an "art" state and city institutions unscrupulously squandered millions of the German people's wealth, while German artist starved to death at the same time.
