Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'The Prose Edda', or 'Younger Edda', is a classic collection of Norse myths of the Icelandic people. Widely considered as compiled by Icelandic scholar and historian Snorri Sturluson around the year 1220, 'The Prose Edda' contains a euhemerized Prologue followed by three tales: the 'Gylfaginning', the story of the creation and destruction of the world of the Norse gods; the 'Skáldskaparmál', consists of a dialogue between Ægir, a god associated with the sea, and Bragi, a skaldic god; and the 'Háttatal', a collection of Old Norse poetry including original compositions by Snorri Sturluson. This classic collection of Old Norse myths is one of the most important of the Icelandic eddas and a must read for fans and scholars of Norse mythology.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The best descriptions of the ideas and attitudes of the early Germanic peoples is represented in the literature of Iceland during the 12th and 13th centuries - before Christianity and foreign influences slowly took over. However, during Snorri's lifetime, the ancient art of Icelandic poetry and the stories of Icelandic culture that it contained was threatened by the narrow-minded clergy in their efforts to eradicate heathenism, and by a new fashion in Icelandic poetry called the dance. In the Edda, Snorri was attempting to educate young poets against narrow-mindedness of subject and disregard of older poetic styles. To his Poetic Diction, he added the Deluding of Gylfi and its Prologue. No one had ever told the Deluding of Gylfi as well as Snorri told it. He inspired a new attitude and understanding toward the pagan culture and philosophy of life, which is reflected in the sagas that were written after his day.

Erstausgabe
First edition in English of this celebrated medieval Icelandic saga by Snorri Sturluson, "the stem and source of the legend of the Norsemen" (PMM). It is the first book of its translator, G. W. Dasent. This copy was from the library of Ananda Coomaraswamy, and bound for him by the Essex House Press. Coomaraswamy translated into English the Völuspá (1905), part of the closely related saga the poetic or elder Edda. The work is rare in commerce. The art historian Coomaraswamy (1877-1947) was an associate of the Essex House Press from 1906. C. R. Ashbee, the press's founder, renovated Coomaraswamy's home of Norman Chapel in Broad Campden and rented a room for himself. Ashbee's four daughters were born in Norman Chapel and his Bibliography (1904) of his press was printed there. Norman Chapel "rapidly became the centre for an artistic circle" (ODNB) of arts and crafts practitioners, many from the neighbouring village Chipping Campden, where Ashbee had moved his press and founded the Guild and School of Handicraft. Ashbee published Coomaraswamy's first art history, Medieval Sinhalese Art (1908), and printed his book label in the press's King's Prayer Book type. Coomaraswamy's "writings on South Asian art formed the principal Western conception of the field for most of the 20th century" (Dictionary). His first wife Ethel Mary Partridge (1872-1952), following in the traditions of the art and crafts movement and William Morris, "played a central role in the revival of hand-weaving in Britain" (ODNB). Coomaraswamy's Völuspá follows the 1876 edition co-translated by William Morris, who read Snorri Sturluson (1179-1241) deeply and visited Iceland to immerse himself in Nordic folklore. Snorri Sturluson later influenced Tolkien, who borrowed the name "Gandálfr" among many other elements. The work's translator, G. W. Dasent (1817-1896), was a leading Norse scholar who began his studies in Stockholm following encouragement from Jacob Grimm. The publication introduced English speakers to "the earliest version of the story of the Aesir and their leader Odin, whose invasion of the North became the religion of Scandinavia. From [the prose Edda] were spun the Nibelungenlied and Beowulf; it left its mark on the Arthurian legend and found new life in Wagner. Snorri's contribution to the literature of Iceland is of inestimable importance " (PMM). The Pickering imprint is here hand-stamped in black on the title page and on the bound-in front wrapper; the stamp does not appear in all copies. The prose Edda was first printed as Edda Islandorum (1665). PMM 168 (for Snorri Sturluson). "Coomaraswamy, Ananda Kentish", Dictionary of Art Historians, accessible online. Octavo (228 x 146 mm). Limp vellum by the Essex House Press, circa 1906, front cover lettered in black by hand, brown silk ties sewn across covers, marbled endpapers, edges uncut. Original wrappers bound in. Errata slip tipped in. Book label of Ananda Coomaraswamy (see note). Tiny spot of wear to spine foot, foxing to contents. A splendidly bound copy, near-fine.
