In der heutigen Geschichtswissenschaft ist er besser als 'Sonnenkönig' bekannt. Seine Regentschaft gilt als Höhepunkt der absolutistischen Monarchie in Europa und der Welt.Bereits im Alter von vier Jahren folgte er 1643 seinem Vater auf den Thron von Frankreich und herrschte 72 Jahre lang bis zu seinem Tod 1715. Während seiner Herrschaft erfuhr Frankreich bedeutsame und folgenreiche Veränderungen in den Bereichen Politik, Wirtschaft und Kultur. In nie zuvor dagewesener Manier verlieh er sogar der Kunst ein neues Gesicht. Als erster Regent im absolutistisch geprägten Frankreich, nutzte er die Macht der Künste und zentralisierte sie an seinem Hof in Versailles, um seine eigene Person zu verherrlichen, zu glorifizieren bzw. sie in allegorischer Form gottgleich darzustellen.Zum einen soll in dieser Arbeit der Frage nachgegangen werden, wie sich Ludwig XIV. während seiner langen Regierungszeit mit den Mitteln der bildenden Kunst hat darstellen lassen und für sich eine, in besonders hohem Maße, auf seine eigene Person zugeschnittene Ikonographie entwickeln ließ. Das Sinnbild seiner Herrschaft war das Zeichen der Sonne, die auf einer Vielzahl von Werken in propagandistischer Weise dargestellt wurde.

Among the ingredients discussed are viper flesh, opium, red roses, and the beaver secretion known as castoreum. The text then considers the tonics called Confection of hyacinth and Alchermes, whose constituents included jacinth, stag horn, ivory, pearl, and lapis lazuli, and the so-called Opiate of Solomon, recommended against fevers, worms, and stomach ache, and as an aid to digestion.No copies traced in the US, and only one location found in the UK (Wellcome Library).
