The deluxe edition with the additional suite of Salvador Dali's illustrations for Lewis Carroll's proto-Surrealist masterpiece. From the edition de luxe limited to 200 signed and numbered copies on vélin de Rives with the additional suite of all the plates on Japon Nacré including the frontispiece etching which is signed in pencil by Dali; the full edition was 2,500 copies on Mandeure paper. Salvador Dalí (illustrator). First edition. A PRESENTATION COPY FOR DR. ROUCAUTE (Dalí's personal physician), with a SIGNED AND DEDICATED INDIA INK DRAWING BY DALI ON A PRELIMINARY BLANK. Most of Dalí's presentation drawings were done on the spur of the moment in ballpoint or felt-tip pen, and are rather simple compositions. This one, however, is in India ink, with Dalí's characteristic carefully-planned spatter: it was obviously prepared ahead of time for presentation to a close friend, the doctor. The drawing measures 27.5 x 30 cm and features several typical elements of Dalí's iconography: a knight on horseback, an angel, a dedicatory phrase, a signature with a crown, and a date. They are arranged in an absolutely wonderful apparent chaos--making it impossible to know what to look at first, or what to focus on--and yet there is perfect harmony. Large 4to. Publisher's cloth with dustjacket. An excellent copy of the book, WITH THE INDIA INK DRAWING IN PERFECT CONDITION.

Alexis ou le traité du vain combat (Alexis or the treatise of vain combat) by Marguerite Yourcenar describes a letter written by a young Austrian man to his wife on the eve of World War II where he confesses that he must leave her in order to discover his true identity. This edition contains an original etching by Salvador Dali inspired by the story, it is signed in pencil by the artist. It is one of 120 copies and is printed on vellum. This particular book comes from the library of the art printer Dominique Viglino. Signed by Illustrator(s).

Protected in mylar. Stated First Edition. Maurice Sandoz was born on April 2, 1892 in Basel, Switzerland. He was a writer, known for The Maze (1953) and Spring-Heeled Jack (1950). He died in 1958 in Lausanne, Switzerland. The book tells the story of a Scots who abruptly breaks off his engagement to pretty Kitty and moves to his uncle's castle in the Scottish highlands. She and her aunt follow him a few weeks later and discover he has suddenly aged. Mysterious things happen in a hedge-maze adjoining the castle.
