An outstanding archive relating to the career of Leutnant Konrad Ellermann, a highly decorated airman who flew with the Condor Legion in Spain and in flying boat operations on the Eismeer Front in northern Europe. It comprises an exemplary pair of carefully annotated albums, supported by some rare and illuminating documentary material. Such comprehensive archives relating to the Legion are now vanishingly scarce. The first album opens with a series of 43 touristic snapshots taken in Spain (Seville, Cadiz, Vigo, and Pollença and Palma in Mallorca); three show the Spanish heavy cruiser Canarias. A further 25 images illustrate his unit relaxing after the delivery of uniforms, sunbathing, posing in flying and winter gear, and images of his fellow airmen (many named). Then follows six images of "unsere treue Heinkel 59" (our trusty Heinkel 59), the twin-engine biplane that could double as torpedo bomber and reconnaissance aircraft, and a sequence of HE 59s being prepared (some excellent close-up detail here of bombs and torpedoes, a gunner manning the plane's dorsal MG15 machine gun), and in the air over water ("Auf-zum! so ging es tagtäglich" = Off we go! That's how it went every day). Aerial shots show enemy territory and a smashed railway station. Six images show ruined buildings after a raid ("Die roten Bomber waren da!" = The Red bombers were there!). An excellent snapshot shows a CANT Z.501 Gabbiano (Gull) flying boat, this particular craft (67-5) in service with the Nationalist Airforce, the three black identification stripes visible on the fuselage. Ellerman then breaks the narrative by dedicating a page to of those of his comrades who have fallen, all during March 1938: Kahl, Jurgens, Zunker, Werner, Keitzel, and Fritsche; with the exception of Kahl, they were presumably the crew of the HE59 shot down near Cambrils, Tarragona, in the early hours of 21 March by Sargento José Sarrió Calatayud of the 1 Escuadrilla of Grupo de Defensa de Costas No 7. Following this are 12 images of funerals and repatriation of the bodies. Four shots show Condor legion fighters, the Heinkel HE 51 and HE 112 and Messerschmidt Bf 109. The reach of Legion sorties is illustrated by aerial images of Portbou (Catalonia) and Oropesa (Toledo), some 900 kilometres apart; two others show the bombing of railway lines. Another page opens with the slogan "Einiges von den Taten!" (Some of the deeds!) and shows two merchant ships sunk by Ellerman's unit: "Jean Weams! Zu gut warest Du beladen. Wir schickten dich darum auf Meeresgrund Edith! Auch Du warst ein Opfer" (Jean Weams! You were too heavily loaded. That's why we sent you to the bottom of the sea. Edith! You too were a victim). The British freighter SS Jean Weems was sunk en route from Marseilles to Barcelona while carrying food supplies for Republican forces. Contemporary reports noted that "the crew were warned by the raiders to take to the boats before bombing commenced and all were landed safely" (The Canberra Times, 2 November 1937). SS Edith was a Danish freighter carrying citrus, the citrus trade being a major source of revenue for the Republican war effort. She was bombed and sunk in August 1938. Four other images show her belching smoke. The album concludes with off duty shots, including a bullfight, and some very fine larger format aerial images of Pollença (Majorca), Tangier, and Portbou (Catalonia). The second album covers service on the Eismeer Front in Norway and Finland and opens with a dozen images of trials of the Dornier Do. 26 flying boat in November 1938. There are three excellent photographs of the plane airborne near Friedrichshafen, home to the Dornier factory, and shots of the second prototype (D-AWDS, which was first flown on 23 November), including its "acceptance ceremony". These are followed by pictures of the crew and Dornier technicians at work. Images of other aircraft include the Blohm & Voss Ha 139, and two aircraft that made transatlantic flights, the French Latécoère 521 (registration F-NORD), and Dornier Do. 18 flying boat (registration D-ARUN Zephir). There are some 20 aerial views of Norway (Oslo, Trondheim, and Hommelvik, among others), including a chance encounter with two Heinkel HE 111s and Kellerman's craft in the water of Rombaken fjord, both near Narvik. This section concludes with a medal ceremony and includes an image of Oberleutnant Karl Otto Max Barth of Lw-Küstenfliegergruppe, who received the Ritterkreuz on 14 December 1940. The next section covers service with Flussklarungsfliegerstaffel (River Clearance Squadron) 1/125, based in Finland: the opening shot is an excellent portrait of Kellerman's Heinkel HD 114 torpedo plane. There follow shots in Helsinki and Turku and of maintenance work on the Heinkels. The album closes with images of the plane's crew off duty and concludes with a fine large head-and-shoulders portrait of Kellerman. The Condor Legion was a Luftwaffe unit assigned by Hermann Göring for special duty with Franco's Nationalist forces in the Spanish Civil War (193639). "It was sent to Franco on the condition that it stay under German command. The Legion consisted of four bomber squadrons (of 12 bombers each) and four fighter squadrons and was backed by antiaircraft and antitank units. It engaged in several raids, especially on Barcelona. On 26 April 1937, it attacked the Basque city of Guernica with great devastation and loss of life" (Ency. Brit.). Born in Geisingen, Baden-Württemberg, in 1915, Kellermann served originally as a funkmeister or radio operator before becoming an observer, probably in 1938. He was awarded the Iron Cross (First and Second Class), the Narvikschild, the Frontflugspange für Kampfflieger ("Front flight clasp for fighter pilots", both gold and silver), Luftwaffe Ehrenpokale für besondere Leistungen im Luftkrieg ("Lutwaffe Honour Cup for Special Achievement in the Air War"), and the Deutsches Kreuz in Gold. His service history is as follows: October 1937 - May 1938: with Aufk.
