Es stellt sich heraus, dass er der (fiktive) deutsche Pilot Wilhelm von Stadde ist, der über Funk mit Saint-Exupéry Freundschaft geschlossen hatte und ihn auf Aufklärungsflügen immer wieder suchte. Die deutsche Luftwaffe erhielt den Auftrag, den legendären Schriftsteller abzuschießen. Als er auf einem Erkundungsflug einen Flügelmann hatte und dieser das Flugzeug Saint-Exupérys sah, versuchte er, Exupéry zu beschützen, sein Flügelmann zerstörte allerdings zunächst das Flugzeug von Staddes und anschließend das Exupérys. 1975 wurde der Asteroid 2578 nach Saint-Exupéry benannt, seit 2000 trägt der Flughafen Lyon Saint-Exupéry seinen Namen. Ebenfalls 2000 erschienen aus Nachlasspapieren zusammengestellte Erinnerungen seiner Witwe Mémoires de la rose (deutsch: Die Rose des kleinen Prinzen).
