Frankfurt Am Main: Schriftgiesserei Ludwig & Mayer, 1930. [4] pp. booklet + 23 leaves. 28.5 x 23 cm. Stiff card folio printed in black and red with four page specimen sample booklet for Erbar-Grotesk and twenty-three (of what should be 24) type sample posters printed in various colors. Folio is in rough shape, with only the separate pieces of the front and rear covers and one of the three interior flaps still extant. Heavy chipping to extremities of folio pieces, with age toning and soiling to edges. Mild age toning to booklet. Mild age toning to posters, a few of which have small folds to some corners. First made available in 1926, the typeface Erbar-Grotesk was designed by Jakob Erbar and produced by the Ludwig & Mayer type foundry. According to Erbar, he started on the design of the font in 1914, but had to postpone work due to the war. He aimed to create a type that would "be free of all individual characteristics, possess thoroughly legible letter forms, and be a purely typographic creation". The typeface Futura was created to compete with Erbar-Grotesk (or simply Erbar) as a truly modern sans-serif typeface for the 20th century, and ended up surpassing Erbar in popularity. These brightly colored posters serve as examples of Erbar in action through advertising, and are a rarity in and of themselves. Only one copy found in WorldCat. Loose Leaves. Very Good/Poor.
